Romantic Getaways Worth Every Penny

Romance looks different for everyone. For some it's a gondola and a glass of Prosecco. For others it's watching the sun melt into the Aegean Sea with someone you love. For others still it's waking up to jungle sounds and ordering room service in Bali while it rains.

All of these are valid. All of these are available. And all three destinations below are worth every single penny.

Venice, Italy — Where Time Moves Differently

Venice is the only city in the world that makes you forget you have a phone. There are no cars. No roads, technically — just canals and bridges and the sound of water against stone. You navigate by getting a little lost, which turns out to be the whole point.

A gondola ride is the thing everyone rolls their eyes at and then does anyway, because it is genuinely one of the most beautiful experiences on the planet. Gliding through narrow canals lined with ancient buildings, under low bridges, past shuttered windows and flower boxes — it's exactly as cinematic as it looks. Worth it.

Beyond the gondola: wander the neighborhoods of Dorsoduro and Cannaregio away from the San Marco tourist crowds. Take the vaporetto (water bus) out to Burano, the island of wildly colorful houses — it's one of the most photographed places in all of Italy and it will not disappoint. Eat at a bacaro — a Venetian wine bar — with cicchetti (small plates) and local wine. Watch Venice at night when the day trippers are gone and the city finally breathes.

Venice is small enough to explore on foot (or by boat), and the historic center rewards slow exploration. Stay in the city proper — not on the mainland — for the full experience.

Venice doesn't need filters. She's been doing this for a thousand years.

Santorini, Greece — The Postcard Made Real

Santorini is one of those places you've seen so many times in photos that you expect it to be somehow less impressive in person. It isn't. If anything, being there — standing at the edge of the caldera looking out at the Aegean, watching the famous sunset from Oia as the sky turns impossible shades of orange and pink — is more than the photos prepare you for.

The whitewashed buildings with blue domes are everywhere in Oia and Fira, and they're exactly as beautiful as advertised. The cliffside pools that seem to hang over the sea. The wine — Santorini's volcanic soil produces some of the best dry white wine in Greece, particularly the Assyrtiko grape. The food — fresh seafood, grilled octopus, local fava, slow-cooked tomatoes.

For couples: stay in Oia or Imerovigli for the best caldera views and easy access to the sunset strip. Book a private sunset sailing tour around the caldera — volcanic hot springs, red and black sand beaches, champagne at sunset. This is one of those travel experiences that genuinely lives up to the hype.

The crowds in peak summer are real, but Santorini in late spring (May-June) or early fall (September-October) is magical — better weather, manageable crowds, and slightly better prices.

Bali, Indonesia — Lush, Spiritual, and Surprisingly Affordable

Bali is what happens when a destination manages to be genuinely stunning, deeply spiritual, culturally rich, and also kind to your bank account all at once. Compared to European romantic destinations, Bali is remarkably affordable — which makes it one of the best value honeymoon and anniversary destinations in the world.

The landscape is extraordinary: rice terraces that seem to climb forever, jungle that presses in on every side, temples perched at the edges of cliffs over the Indian Ocean. Ubud, in the interior, is the cultural heart — art galleries, traditional dance performances, yoga retreats, the sacred Monkey Forest. Seminyak and Canggu on the coast have the beach clubs, the surf, the sunset restaurants.

Bali's luxury is its own category. The private villa experience — your own infinity pool, open-air living spaces, daily breakfast, and a staff that makes sure everything is perfect — is genuinely luxurious and costs a fraction of what the equivalent would run in Europe. Romantic breakfasts delivered to your villa. Couples massages at world-class spas for prices that seem impossible.

The spiritual element is real and worth engaging with. The island is predominantly Hindu in a way that infuses daily life — morning offerings at the temple steps, incense, traditional ceremony. Watching the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset, above the Indian Ocean, as the sky turns red behind the performers — that is a memory you will carry.

Bali is affordable without feeling cheap. Spiritual without being inaccessible. Beautiful without requiring you to do anything except show up.

The Bottom Line

Romance is not one size. Venice is historic and intimate. Santorini is dramatic and visual. Bali is lush and grounding. All three are worth every penny.

Pick the one that sounds like you — like both of you — and book it. The right romantic getaway is the one you actually take.
